A few years ago, I was asking teachers in my school about the new CCTV headquarters.
They were sceptical, everyone knew that OMA won the contest, but now one knew for sure what was going on, if its going to be really built or not.
Back in 2006 MOMA New York held an exhibition centered around the amazing CCTV project, exploring it from the outside to the inside and back. The exhibition was organized by Tina di Carlo, Assistant Curator, Department of Architecture and Design, and Alexandra Quantrill, Curatorial Assistant, Department of Architecture and Design.
The project was considered to be a milestone in architecture, equivalent of the pyramids for our society.
And indeed it is.
It is not only a new way of seeing architecture and design but a totally new way of perceiving a building and the space that it defines, a totally new way of seeing the world.
Rem Koolhaas stated in his book "Content" that "in China, money doesn't have the last word (yet). There is a conceptual place that could accommodate the construction of CCTV as a whole"
OOOOOK!
So... I'll take that China is more interested in symbols... even if more then half of the country is dying of hunger, and if not the government is killing them anyway (see Tibet)
The CCTV is due to be opened on the 8th of August, the start of the Olympic Games in Beijing.
A true moment of celebration (celebration of sports, the human body, peace in the world and all that jazz).
But i think that after investing humongous amounts of money into the most amazing buildings the world has ever seen (all built by European architects!!!), China is more interested in showing the entire world its financial power.
A big showoff.
And I couldn't help myself thinking about the big showoff that Berlin had in '36.
AMNESIA!?
Ignorance?
So...
Symbols, expensive, innovative symbols, symbols of what?
CCTV is short for China Central Television, but ironically it also means close circuit television (u know... surveillance cameras, in the tube, on the buss, on the streets, etc.)
A TV station known for its censorship and brain washing techniques.
I'm glad that MOMA considered CCTV to be the symbol of our civilisation.
A TV station, what more could we ask for?
Symbol of...
OPPRESSION
CENSORSHIP
MONEY
VIOLENCE
SEX
IGNORANCE
OH!
Human nature... SEX & VIOLENCE!
I recommend a splendid article "Power Dressing" written by Deyan Sudjic for "Frieze" in may 2006.
P.S
The architect in charge of the CCTV project is Ole Scheeren (NOT REM KOOLHAAS!!!) OMA partner (one of the 4) and the mastermind behind the Prada Epicenter Stores.
